Obituary for Geraldine J. DeMarco

Our beautiful mother, Geraldine “Gerry” DeMarco died at home on the morning of June 3, 2016. Gerry was born July 21, 1929 at Bensonhurst Maternity Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. She was the only child of the late Frank and Elena Gallo Ribaudo and considered her parents to be quite extraordinary. Gerry grew up in Brooklyn, attended public schools there, and was a proud graduate of LaFayette High School. Gerry was an even prouder graduate of Misericordia University in Dallas, PA Class of ‘51 and received a B.S. in elementary education. Gerry obtained her first job when she was 14 years old and held various part-time jobs throughout high school and college. After graduating from college she worked for the March of Dimes in New York City. She married Peter DeMarco in 1952. They moved to Jamestown, NY where she taught elementary school before moving to Syracuse to raise her family. In later years she worked as a hostess at the Gaslight Restaurant in Fayetteville Mall and at the Onondaga County Public Library before retiring.
Gerry was predeceased by her beloved son, James Francis DeMarco in 1968. She is survived by her “two girls”, her loving daughters, Geraldine “Gerry” (Frank) McCarthy and Elizabeth “Liz” (Ted) Loftus; and her three grandsons, James (Petra) McCarthy, Anthony (Lydia) McCarthy and Edward J. Loftus.
Gerry was a devoted daughter, mother and grandmother. She was a remarkable woman who not only possessed great intelligence and style but showed tremendous strength and fortitude throughout her life. She will be truly missed by her family and friends and said to “say goodbye to all my good friends”.
We would like to thank Hospice of Central New York and all her caregivers. Gerry was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church in Fayetteville where calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 from 10 am to Noon. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow the calling hours. She will be buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt next to her son.
