From there, Mark went on to pursue his Masters Degree in European history at St. Andrews University in St. Andrews, Scotland. Mark chose to return to the states instead to pursue an additional Masters Degree, earning his M.S.L.S. and graduating from Case Western Reserve University in 1975.
Mark’s passion was in higher education and in the arts and humanities. He began working in academia while studying for his second Masters degree, and took a position upon graduating as an assistant in Special Collections at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Following this, Mark worked for three years at Washington University as the Rare Book Librarian in St. Louis, MO. From here, Mark made his last professional move to Upstate New York, where he took a position as Rare Book Bibliographer at Syracuse University in 1977. He was later promoted several times, and became the Head of Special Collections in 1990.
Through the course of his career, Mark received several distinguished awards, honors, and research grants. Beginning in 1967 with an English speaking Union Fellowship at the St. John’s School in England. Mark was awarded the Jesse Hauk Shera Award in 1975 for promise of future scholarly contributions to librarianship. The following year he was endowed a research grant by the Horncrest Foundation to support primary research in Dublin on the history of obstetrics/midwifery in 18th century Ireland. Mark then started teaching as a guest lecturer in 1978, in addition he went on to author several academic publications, and grants for research.
Mark received the Post-Standard Award for Distinguished Service to the Syracuse University Library in 1996 from Library Associates, The Library’s friends group, which he was a ten-year Board of Trustees member. Mark was an avid collector of artwork, rare books and other artifacts, mainly with a focus on Scotland. His interest in this area was born from his love for this country through his time spent living and studying in St. Andrews as a young adult.
