We were neighbors of Joanne’s from 1969 until 2014. She and Jeanne Brown and I had some wonderful times together. I’m not saying that we literally “heard the chimes at midnight,” because we had kids and had to be home for the school bus at 3:00 p.m., but we did have a good time. Long after those wild days of the seventies were over, my son Fred threw a huge party involving noise and a banned substance. Someone called the cops, but the neighbors declined to press charges. After I got back I ran into Joanne at Carl’s Drugs and apologized if the noise bothered her. It hadn’t, and when I told her about the party, she gave me a big smile and said “well, good for Fred!” I will always remember and admire her for her tolerant, free, non-conformist spirit. I also remember and admire the way she was a second mother to Larry Brown, who lived at her house for a while.
