Obituary for Robert L. Rhoades

Robert L. Rhoades, 86, died peacefully on Saturday, January 23, 2016 with his family at his side. Formerly of Baldwinsville, NY, he was born and raised in East Syracuse and graduated from East Syracuset High School in 1948.
Bob served in the Army during the Korean War era and was a Past Captain and life member of the East Syracuse Fire Department.
He worked at G.E., The Prosperity Company and the East Syracuse Police Department before joining the Onondaga County Sheriffs Dept. in 1961 where he worked under Sheriffs Major, Corbett and Dillon. Under Sheriff Corbett he rose to the rank of Lieutenant and formed, trained and supervised Onondaga County’s first Drug Enforcement Unit, participated in training the first S.W.A.T Team and taught classes at the Police Academy. He retired in 1981 after 20 years and stayed active as a greens keeper at Ironwood Golf & Country Club until 2013.
He was predeceased by his parents Bill and Dorothy; nephews Russell and Ronald and niece Roxanne Rhoades; great nephew Jason Rhoades and in 2014 lost the love of his life, his wife Gayle Gallo Rhoades.
He is survived by his son Brett (Michele) Rhoades; step-daughters Valerie and Roseanne Gallo and Becky Sullivan; brother Richard (Virginia); grandchildren Ashley, Madison, Brett and Cooper Rhoades, Seth Randall, Alexandra Mae and Kiana Brownell and two great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his beloved niece Renae (Scott) Montroy; niece Sharon Rhoades; nephew Randall (Patty) Rhoades; in-laws, Andrea Bounds, Greg (Colleen) Iseneker, Brad (Eileen) Iseneker and two generations of great nieces and nephews who will miss their Uncle Bob.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the R. H. Schepp & Son Minoa Chapel, 6530 Schepp’s Corners Road, Minoa. A funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, burial will follow the funeral service at Onondaga Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bob’s name may be made to the East Syracuse Fire Department.
